PRINT COVERAGE - WHY I LIKE TO DO SOME THINGS THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY.

To herald in the end of an era, Daniel Craig fronts British GQ’s April 2020 issue, giving his last interview as James Bond. This era-defining, exclusive issue also includes an unlikely choice for a men’s lifestyle magazine.

AN INVITATION TO THE GENTLEMEN’S QUARTERS

I was abroad in Vietnam when I was contacted by British GQ, asking if I’d like my work to appear in their “Advertising Feature” for the April edition. Editorial features are a costly marketing expense and as I was abroad my budget was limited. After an unsuccessful attempt to agree on a price for the feature, I was surprised to receive an email with some exciting news: I was going to be featured for FREE!!

*Proudly standing at the top spot of the moodboard-style editorial is my painting of Revere. This colorful and soulful amalgamation of charcoal, soft pastels, and gold leaf calls to the wise and brilliant mind of the elephant. What better way to represent my fantastical depictions of wildlife than with this work?

The feeling of having my rather whimsical artwork featured in a publication aimed predominantly at men (and one of the most iconic issues of said magazine, at that) was an extraordinary shock. The popularity of this magazine, not to mention who was gracing the cover, meant that my artwork would be seen by a previously untapped demographic. In this way, there is something to be said for traditional media, as it’s unlikely most of GQ’s readers would have ever come across my artwork on social media or my website. Sometimes, perhaps, the old ways are the best.

Now, to celebrate with a freshly shaken martini.

SOMETIMES, PERHAPS, THE OLD WAYS ARE THE BEST.

The popularity of this magazine meant that my artwork would be seen by a previously untapped demographic.
